Bristol’s Most Exciting Creative Communities

Bird-eye view of Bristol

When it comes to creative spirit, nowhere does it quite like Bristol. From street art to radio, stop motion to photography, the city is simmering with fresh talent eager to make their mark on the creative world. But gaining traction as an artist is no mean feat, and it is often from within grass-roots communities that the seeds of greatness are sewn.

So, if you’re looking for support from like-minded creatives, here are a few of the most exciting creative communities Bristol has to offer.

Girls Camera Club

A collective of women and non-binary identifying photographers, GIRLS Camera Club was formed in November 2021 as a space in which creative individuals could come together, share ideas and bond over their mutual love for the art and technical craft of photography.

Unified by the need to express, articulate, and understand oneself through art, GIRLS Camera Club serves as a vital platform for personal and artistic growth, promoting inclusivity and diversity in the field of photography. By providing a space where diverse voices can be heard and celebrated, the collective challenges traditional norms and pushes for greater representation and recognition of underrepresented groups in the arts.

Three years and several successful exhibitions, workshops, print sales and fundraisers later, the collective stands strong, with new members regularly attending meet-ups and open calls.

Noods Radio

Next on our list is Noods Radio, a not-for-profit community radio station in the heart of the city. Since its inception back in 2015, Noods has earned heroic status within the creative community, broadcasting an energetically eclectic blend of all things aural seven days a week.

Located within the locally-beloved Mickey Zoggs bar, Noods provides a wonderfully diverse soundtrack to life in the city. From funk and soul to jungle, techno, cosmic, dub, reggae, Balearic and spoken word, an hour or two tuned into Noods’s DJs is sure to broaden your horizons and brighten your day.

In their own words, Nood Radio is home to an array of misfits, collectors and selectors from around the globe. Tune in to Noods here.

Creative Shift

Bridging the gap between artistic expression and wellbeing, Creative Shift is an organisation dedicated to delivering arts on referral services. Working in collaboration with a number of Health, Social Prescribing, Community and Cultural partners, Creative Shift provides a space in which individuals can socialise, de-stress and escape the challenges of everyday life.

Brought together by the belief that art has the power to transform lives, Creative Shift offers a variety of programmes aimed at enhancing mental health and well-being. These include face-to-face and online sessions, tailored to meet the needs of diverse groups, from young people to adults. Projects, such as the ‘Reach In Reach Out‘ initiative seek to engage young people in creative activities, fostering skills and confidence while encouraging community engagement.

Almost 10 years since their formation, Creative Shift remains a vital part of the community, offering a supportive space for individuals to explore and develop their creativity, connect with others and improve their mental health.

Saffron Music

It’s a disappointing reality that less than 5% of the music industry is comprised of women, non-binary or trans people and that less than 1% of those are people of colour – an underrepresentation that is prevalent across all creative sectors. Thankfully, there are creative communities within Bristol fighting for change.

Founded by Laura Lewis-Paul, Saffron Music is on a mission to reshape the music industry, providing accessible learning and development opportunities for women and non-binary people. In an industry reliant on digital technology, Saffron provides their community of producers, musicians, engineers and artists with access to courses and mentoring opportunities, harnessing technology as a tool for full self-expression.

Diverse Artists Network

Last but by no means least, we wanted to shed some light on the Diverse Artists Network, a collective dedicated to promoting underrepresented artists and celebrating diversity in the creative world.

With a strong focus on community and inclusion, DAN provides resources, mentorship, and support, fostering an environment where creativity thrives. Their initiatives ensure that diverse voices are heard and celebrated within the arts sector.

What’s more, as well as their artist spotlight, DAN provides a wealth of resources designed to assist artists at all stages of their careers. These include funding application tips, artist contracts, invoicing basics, and guides on social media for creatives. They also offer support for organisations, ensuring that events are accessible and inclusive.
