Meanwhile in Cardiff: 8 Places to Escape in Cardiff
This year, we launched Meanwhile House Cardiff. Our first affordable office space project outside of Bristol. Most of the time, the vibrance of the city is great. Once in a while it’s nice to get away. Here are eight places you can find some escapism in and around Cardiff.
1) Castell Coch
Castell Coch translates to Red Castle. The castle was built as an occasional summer home for John Crichton-Stuart in the late 19th century. Today, you can visit the Castle for a small fee.
2) Roath Park
You probably already know about Roath Park if you’re from Cardiff. It’s one of the city’s main attractions, and for good reason. You can spend a whole day here if you have time. Above is the garden, which looks beautiful in autumn colours.
There is also a lake and a lighthouse, known as the Scott Memorial.
Finally, there is a glasshouse.
3) Fforest Fawr Sculpture Trail
If you visit Castell Coch (number one on our list), you’ll find yourself near the Fforest Fawr Sculpture Trail. The trail tells the story of a giant creature that lives in the woods. It’s a great day out for families.
4) Dyffryn Gardens
Dyffryn Gardens is a National Trust site, to the west of Cardiff. There’s 55 acres of land to explore, and a restored Edwardian house. There’s always something happening here, check out their online calendar.
5) Sully Island
You have to plan very carefully if you want to visit Sully Island. Even strong swimmers have died here at high tide. If you do want to visit the island, you should arrive at the crossing one hour before low tide, and make sure you give yourself time to get back. If you don’t, you’re suck on the island without food/shelter/water overnight. Even with this in mind, many will vouch that the island is worth a visit.
6)Penarth Pavillion
If the thought of Sully Island is a little too unnerving for you, we won’t blame you. Penarth Pavillion is tamer. There is a cinema and an art gallery there too.
7)Bute Park
Bute Park is a great place to escape if you’re stuck in the city centre. There’s a huge park, an arboretum and three cafes. You’ll also find the animal wall here – one of Cardiff’s most photographed attractions.
8) Cathays Park
Cathays Park is another city centre escape. Here you’ll find a number of listed buildings and a picturesque park. The park looks great in spring when the trees are pink, though it’s a great place to be all year round.
