This summer we welcomed a trio of artists to one of our studios in Deben House. They are Tom Goldstone, Amalia Pascal and Maria Jose Carvallo. Each of them has a unique story to tell, accompanied by an inspiring portfolio. We will be featuring them in a series of three blog posts to welcome them to Meanwhile Creative. First up, meet Tom.

What’s your story?

Tom Goldstone grew up in a small village in Pembrokeshire, Wales. He first encountered his love for art at school where he studied art and design. This led him to Pembrokeshire College, where he studied fine art, photography and psychology, followed by a fine art foundation year. Pembrokeshire College was Tom’s route to Bristol, where he attended UWE to study fine art. He graduated last summer, and has been in search of a suitable studio share to continue his projects in.

Your Work

Tom has worked with a variety of media. His journey began with painting. He was encouraged to branch out during his time at UWE and became interested in 3D mediums such as clay.

“I loved working in 3D. It felt like I was rebelling against a digital age.” 

One of Tom’s favourite projects at university was a piece that concerned the relationship between the artist and the viewer. In the project, he concealed one of his paintings in a box and described the painting to those around him. Resultantly, both parties focused on the trust between an artist and a viewer.

After curating a love for designing and building, Tom’s final piece at university involved designing and building seating in a way that encouraged viewers to talk about art.

A number of Tom’s works are built from recycled and upcycled materials that he sources from supermarkets and shops. He is keen to make something new from things that would otherwise go to waste.

What do you like about Deben House?

“There is a nice crowd at Deben House. Both in my studio with Amalia and Maria, and in general. I like that the studios have windows, it’s inspiring to see what others are working on.”
