The Mute Collective is a Bristol-born clothing company. They fuse the ideas of artists, photographers and videographers with quality fabrics, to create unique outdoor gear and day-to-day tees. We called in to Deben House to catch up with founder, Emma.

You only need to glimpse at Emma’s studio space to tell she is passionate about design. The walls are decorated with inspiration, sketches and Mute Collective’s upcoming projects.

Emma grew up in Somerset. She has a history of creativity and adventure. Emma attended college in Street, where she became friends with an assortment of artists and designers. Following this studied Fashion Photography in Southampton University. In her final year, she launched Mute Collective as part of her final major project. At the time, it was a platform for Emma to create and sell beanies to her friends, making videos and making use of the universities studio space.

After graduating, Emma went to work in the mountains. Her love for the sense of adventure inspired her to transform Mute Collective into a business.

As time has progressed, Emma built a large network of artists, photographers and videographers. She sources materials from an eco-friendly fabric company, and incorporates the artists’ designs in ways that work with the materials.  Once the design process is complete, Emma can look forward to receiving the final products.

After the stock arrives it’s time for building publicity. Mute Collective’s take on PR has a streak of adventure. In ‘mute media’, Emma works with filmmakers across the globe to showcase her designs in action. From snowboarding to surfing, hiking to exploring, all types of adventure are encouraged.

Emma is also working on a project called ‘adventure club’, where she collaborates with bloggers and travellers to document Mute Collective in various adventures. She is currently working on a project with a Londoner who is renowned for documenting our world’s volcanoes, and a couple touring the USA in a van.
